Choosing between Runway, Kling and Veo on an API
Updated 2026-10-02
This page does not crown a winner. Output quality is subjective and changes with each release, and nothing here is a benchmark. What it offers is the set of practical questions that decide which model family fits an integration, and what VideoRouter's documentation shows about each.
Access model: one key, no vendor accounts
Going direct, each vendor means its own account, billing relationship, rate limits and SDK. Through VideoRouter the three share one endpoint (POST /videos), one prepaid balance and one error format. You do not need a Runway developer account, a Google Cloud project for Veo, or a Kling account. For a team that wants to evaluate before committing, that makes switching a one-string change:
- Runway generation:
runway/gen-4.5 - Kling: for example
kling-v3.0-std(other Kling lines are on the Kling v3 page) - Veo:
google/veo-3.1,google/veo-3.1-fast,google/veo-3.1-lite
Kling 4.0 was announced on 2026-09-28 but is not offered by any host in the catalog yet; compare what is listed.
What each family offers in the catalog
| Question | Runway | Kling | Veo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generation models | Gen-4.5 (text and image-to-video) | Several lines: v2.6, v3, v3 Omni, v3 Turbo, motion control | 3.1 in Full, Fast and Lite tiers |
| Editing existing footage | Aleph 2 via input_video_url | Kling v3 Omni supports an editing mode on one documented host | Extension of Veo-generated clips documented on one host; check the model page |
| Host breadth | Few hosts for Gen-4.5 | Many hosts on some lines | Multiple hosts per tier |
| Cheaper draft tier | Not a separate row in the catalog | Turbo and std rows | Fast and Lite rows |
Treat this table as a map of where to look next, not as a feature matrix; capabilities vary per host, so verify on the model page. In particular, the editing rows are different mechanisms: Aleph 2 modifies a clip, while Veo's extension continues one. See editing options.
Host breadth changes your risk and your price
The same checkpoint is often sold by several providers. More hosts means a wider price spread you can exploit and more places to fail over to when one is down. Fewer hosts means the opposite. Runway Gen-4.5 sits at the thin end of that scale, so budget for a fallback model in your own code. Compare spreads live:

Questions to ask before committing
Ask what happens when the only host for your chosen row is down for an hour. Ask whether your content depends on a mode the model lacks, such as references or editing. Ask who owns the account relationship if a vendor changes terms. With one key and one endpoint, the answers are mostly configuration: swap the model string, or add a second model as a fallback. Without that, each answer is a project.
Decision framework
- Modes. Do you need editing, references, or plain generation? Eliminate rows that lack a required mode. Editing and references are mutually exclusive in a single request.
- Cost shape. Do you need a cheap draft tier with the same request shape as the final? Veo and Kling have lighter rows; check the live table for the actual gap rather than assuming one.
- Resilience. Is the feature customer-facing? Prefer rows with several hosts, and keep a second model on standby.
- Your prompts. Run 10 to 20 representative prompts at identical duration and aspect ratio on the finalists and score the outputs against criteria you set in advance.
- Integration cost. Because the code is identical across families, this should be near zero; if a candidate demands a different integration, count that against it.
Reading the documentation for each family
When you check a model page, look for four things: the supported durations, the resolution tiers, the input modes, and the list of hosts with their per-second rates. Those four determine whether your request shape works and what it costs. Note that a mode listed for the family is not necessarily supported on every host of every row, so confirm against the specific row you plan to call. If a detail is not on the page, treat it as unknown and test it with a short, low-cost request before you build around it.
A harness that treats them equally
CANDIDATES = ["runway/gen-4.5", "kling-v3.0-std", "google/veo-3.1-fast"]
for model in CANDIDATES:
r = requests.post("https://videorouter.sh/api/v1/videos",
headers={"Authorization": "Bearer llmr_sk_live_..."},
json={"model": model, "prompt": PROMPT, "duration_secs": 5, "aspect_ratio": "16:9"})
print(model, r.status_code, r.json())
Remember that duration_secs is snapped to what each model supports and billing follows the snapped value, so a "5 second" test is not necessarily 5 seconds on every candidate. Failed upstream jobs are not billed, polling is free, and the platform fee is 2% on image and video usage.
When to pin a host
Unpinned requests go to the cheapest healthy host and fail over automatically. Pin with model/host only for a reason: a capability that only one host has, or a policy requirement. Otherwise you give up the failover that is most valuable for models with few hosts.
Start with the Gen-4.5 guide or the quickstart, and create a key to run the harness.
Frequently asked questions
Which is best, Runway, Kling or Veo?
There is no universal answer. Decide by required input modes, host breadth and cost shape, then compare outputs on your own prompts at identical settings.
Do I need separate accounts to try all three?
No. A single VideoRouter key reaches Runway, Kling and Veo through the same POST /videos request, billed from one prepaid balance.
Does Runway offer something the others do not?
Aleph 2 (runway/aleph-2) is a video-to-video editing model available through input_video_url. Other families have their own editing or extension modes, which work differently.
Is Kling 4.0 available to compare?
Not yet. It was announced on 2026-09-28 but no host in the catalog serves it.
